Italian Regions
The Regions of Italy are the first-level administrative divisions of the state. There are twenty regions, five of which are autonomous regions with special statutes. Italy's regions (regioni) are equivalent to U.S. states. If you are familar with Italian cooking you probably will recognize the names of some regions, because Italian cooking styles are regionally distinctive. There is currently a proposal under consideration in Italy to reduce the number of regions to twelve. The map below shows the current twenty regions of Italy.
